A retraceable pencil made by S.Mordan. Sampson Mordan as accredited as being a co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. These pencils and pens, despite being gold and silver, could never be hallmarked thanks to the base metal mechanism, meaning we cannot put a precise date on this. We know for certain though that it was made before 1941 when the Mordan factory was destroyed during the blitz. We have set this up as a pedant making use of a 14ct yellow gold swivel, aka dog clip. It would have traditionally been attached to a gentleman’s watch chain as been kept in a waist coat pocket while in use.
Metal: 18ct gold with base metal mechanism as well as base metal casing. This is not rolled gold or gold plated, the yellow metal you see is a very thick 18ct gold capping.
Marks: S. Mordan & Co. 18ct.
Measurements: Taken from the very top of the swivel clasp, this piece is 81mm tall. 8.2mm wide. When fully extended the pencil measures 90mm long.
Weight: Total overall weight 24 grams.
Condition: Excellent.
